And so the book was ruined by 1 phrase around 27% in… “That shit slapped.”
I really try not to be negative with reviews but y’all, I struggled with this one. So let me start by saying if you enjoyed this one, that’s so great for you.
This book was just… not it. The idea of this was intriguing which is why I picked it up in the first place. However, the phrases and descriptions used are so out there, that I just couldn’t get past it. When it comes to bodily fluids and functions, I tend to cringe and not understand the why behind including it. The book cover is beautiful, but the inside is literally so bad. I was about 54% in and was still struggling to care about continuing. With over 50,000 ratings and a high average, I was tempted to keep going in hopes that it improved, but found it really challenging.
One major issue for me is the overwhelming misogyny throughout. Phrases like “She’s just so delicate” and “Oh, she’s so weak, how will she protect herself?” are repeated to the point where I just couldn’t take it anymore. The focus on how “tiny” and “small” the female character is feels excessive and, frankly, sickening. While I did want to know what happens, the portrayal of women really put me off. After finishing book 1, I decided to DNF the series.
I would personally skip this one but if you like Gen Z phrasing, disgusting descriptions, the weakest female character in history, then go fot it.
