Spark of the Everflame

Spark of the Everflame

The Kindred’s Curse Saga, Book One

Author: Penn Cole

Pages: 438

June 1, 2023

Rating: 4 out of 5.

In a world ruled by gods and their cruel descendants, Diem Bellator yearns to escape her impoverished village. Her mother’s mysterious disappearance and the discovery of a dangerous secret propel her into the perilous world of Descended royalty. As she navigates complex politics and an impending civil war, Diem must unravel her mother’s secrets and confront a powerful heir to save her family and all of mortalkind.

My initial thoughts:
1. Diem is self-righteous, selfish, and reckless.

2. Henry downright sucks. He’s the worst friend to Diem and may deserve a little punch in the face.

3. Luther has the personality of cardboard.

Now that being said, I actually enjoyed the story quite a lot. However, for the number of pages, so much happens while nothing really happens at all. The plot was well-thought out and the writing itself was great. My biggest issue was Diem. It was such a challenge to connect with her. Her constant anger and recklessness, driven by her mother’s abandonment and internal battle between being human and descended, made her a tough protagonist to root for. She was incredibly selfish in her decisions while claiming to be a “good” person.

So basically you’re telling me there are 4 books out already and the series is still going? Word of advice: Prepare for a long journey.

Would I recommend Spark of the Everflame? Overall, yes.
